What is Title 24?
Every three years, California’s Building Energy Efficiency Standards get an upgrade to improve building efficiency and reduce wasteful and unnecessary energy consumption. This year’s new standards will take effect on January 1, 2020, in alignment with California’s Net Zero goals for 2030. In this article, we will discuss how prefab metal buildings can help meet those standards and save you money.

Here are three things you need to know about the updated Title 24 and how this affects newly constructed and existing buildings:
- New technologies – For the first time, Title 24 requires new residential buildings to include photovoltaic systems. New homes built in 2020 and beyond will be highly efficient, not only in their insulation and ability to passively retain optimal temperatures, but they will be able to generate enough power through rooftop solar and photovoltaic generation to meet the home’s expected annual electric needs.
- Save Money– The new standards could increase the initial cost of constructing a new home by about $9,500 BUT will save an estimated $19,000 in energy and maintenance costs over the next 30 years. The Energy Commission estimates average monthly savings of $80 on heating, cooling, and electric bills.
- Energy Savings – New homes built with the updated 2019 standards are expected to use about 7 percent less energy than homes built to previous standards. If you take into consideration the new rooftop solar generation measures, homes built in 2020 will use about 53 percent less energy. According to California’s Energy Efficiency Standards Fact sheet, this will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 700,000 metric tons over three years, or in other words, will save as much energy as taking 115,000 fossil fuel-dependent cars off the road!
